The Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme ( PMSSS) for Jammu and Kashmir 2021 to 2022 is a group of experts who have been brought together by the Prime Minister on 18th of August, 2010. The reason behind doing so was to improve the employment opportunities for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). It is now a Union Territory known as the UT of J&K  and Ladakh. It aims at formulating a job plan involving both public and private sectors and amongst the key recommendations by the Expert Group, one that stood out was to offer 5000 fresh and new scholarships per annum to motivate the youth of J & K to follow up with higher studies outside the state of J & K to explore new opportunities and secure their future.  This point of view arises out of the identified strategy of a specific human development initiative that solely focuses on improving the skill set through better availability of educational facilities.

The objective of the Schemes

 After the students of Jammu and Kashmir pass the class 12 examinations or the equivalent exams, they will look to secure admission in government colleges or institutions outside or within the union territory of Jammu, Kashmir Ladakh. For this to happen, the scheme looks to provide academic fees ( admissible and tuition fee) and the maintenance allowance ( to pay for the expenses of the hostel, books cost, incidental charges, and so on). The scheme was launched in 20111 and has been ever since improved over time to better suit the needs of the current trends.

Scope

5000 new scholarships are to be provided every year out of which 2070 of them are for General Degree Courses whereas 2380 are for Professional/ Engineering courses and 100 for Medical Courses. The numbers are flexible but the total number is 5000.

Eligibility

Students who are domicile of Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have cleared 12th examination from CBSE or JKBOSE affiliated schools located within the UTs of J&K and Ladakh, have a family income of Rs. 8lakh p.a or less, qualify the merit conditions are eligible to apply for the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarships Scheme.

Duration of Scholarships

The renewal of scholarships is subject to good conduct, maintenance of required attendance, and a clear-cut promotion record to subsequent classes. If the candidate is successful in complying with these conditions, they may apply for renewal of scholarships. If the said candidate falls ill during the month of the exam or right around it which stops them from appearing for the qualifying exams, the student might be able to sit for the same exam next year provided they submit the relevant medical documents.

Steps to register

  1. Upload a passport size photograph, scanned copy of the signature, domicile certificate, SSC Marksheet, Family income certificate, bank details of the student, Aadhaar number, and so on.
  • Select a preferred course which he/ she intends on pursuing
  • Upload the scanned copy of the first two pages of the Bank Passbook / Canceled cheque indicating the name of the account holder, name and address of the bank, IFSC code, and MICR code.

The scheme has received a widespread positive response from the direct beneficiaries as well as the experts and spectators who have closely understood the methodology of the scheme.
