The Government of India and Life Insurance Cooperation (LIC) have collaborated to develop the “Khadi Karigar Janashree Bima Yojana,” a group insurance scheme designed to give life insurance coverage to khadi artisans (spinners and weavers). This programme provides insurance coverage for the insured member’s normal death, accidental death, and disability. The premium amount for insurance is partially subsidised by the Government of India and partially by a contribution from the social security fund under this scheme.

The following are the benefits of the Khadi Karigar Janashree Bima Yojana for providing insurance coverage to Khadi Karigar:
Natural Death Insurance
In the event of the member’s natural death, a Sum is Assured of Rs. 30,000/- will be paid to the nominee.
Accident Insurance
A Sum Assured of Rs. 75,000/- would be given to the nominee in the event of accidental death or total permanent disability.
In the event of partial disability (loss of one eye or one leg), the applicant would be awarded a Sum Assured of Rs. 37,000/-.
Procedure to claim
The beneficiary of a deceased individual must follow the steps outlined below:
Step 1: The recipient must submit the original death certificate of the deceased to the Pension Group Schemes Department of the Life Insurance Corporation of India via the Khadi Institution of which the deceased was a member.
Step 2: In the instance of accidental deaths, the police investigation report must be presented along with the application.
Step 3: The agency will then transmit the documents, along with the claim records/papers, to LIC, the branch that initially finalised the insurance cover.
Step 4: The Life Insurance Corporation will settle all claims by sending a check to the beneficiary’s account Payee. This notification must be given to the appropriate state government.
Eligibility Criteria
Those who need to be insured under this programme must meet the following requirements in order to reap the benefits of the scheme:
- The age range should be between 18 and 59 years old.
- Those who are both below and marginally above the poverty level are eligible to apply for the initiative, according to Khadi Karigar.
- The scheme would be open to any member of the authorised vocation/occupation groups.
- LIC will identify and notify the organisations in consultation with the Nodal Agency.
- A group must have at least 25 members.
Benefits
This scheme also grants scholarships to students whose families are eligible for the Khadi Karigar Janashree Bima Yojana. Students in the ninth through twelfth grades, including those doing ITI, are eligible for Rs. 600 scholarship every six months. The scholarship system allows for a maximum of two children.
Contribution of Premium
The annual premium for each application will be distributed as follows:
- Contribution of the Government of India (GoI) of Rs. 50
- LIC-managed Social Security Fund Rs. 50
- Rs. 50 for Khadi Institutions
- KVIC (Rs. 25)
- Khadi Karigar 25 Rs.
This premium is subsidised by the social security fund to 50%, with the remainder coming from either the insured member or the nodal agency in charge of implementing the scheme. The scholarship would be free of charge.
