RGNIYD — Academic, Training and Capacity Building Programmes

The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu is an Institution of National Importance under Parliament Act No. 35/2012 under the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport. The RGNIYD was incorporated in 1993 under the Companies Registration Act, XXVII of 1975.

The RGNIYD acts as an important resource centre with its multiple functions of offering postgraduate level academic programs covering different dimensions of youth development and engaging in research that is essential in the essential areas of youth. Developing and coordinating training programs for government agencies and youth organization officials, in addition to outreach and outreach initiatives across the country.

The Institute acts as the Ministry’s think tank and the main organization for youth-related activities in the country. At the national level, it works closely with  NSS, NYKS and other youth organizations to implement training programmes. The institute is a central agency for the training of youth as facilitators of youth development activities in rural, urban and also in tribal areas. He has a wide network with various organizations working for the well-being and development of young people and acts as a mentor.

Academic

The curricula of the RGNIYD are tailored to impart knowledge and information from interdisciplinary perspectives that fuse the diverse aspects of contemporary social thought and theory. In addition to training in the academic scholarship process, the institute also offers students the opportunity to innovate and transform academic knowledge into practical experiences in both rural and urban settings. All of the RGNIYD’s postgraduate courses and doctoral programs in youth studies have a clear and distinctive focus: to develop their students into professionals in both the public and private sectors.

Training and Capacity Building

With a view to developing the professional capacity of youth organizations, both governmental and voluntary, to enable them to carry out their work more effectively, the Center approaches its mission through the following two departments.

Department of Training and Orientation

The department conducts training and orientation programs to expand the knowledge base and improve the skills of officials of professional youth development agencies through short-term training programs and provides expertise in designing training programs to have in-house training.

It supports youth development agencies in strengthening their areas of activity; in particular the development of programs and their implementation through the provision of consulting services. The department organizes thematic/tailored training programs for youth organizations: government agencies such as Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and National Service Scheme,  voluntary youth organizations and youth officers to enable added value. in their respective areas of development work.

Department of Livelihood development

The department, in cooperation with the integrated central/state government agencies, promotes youth entrepreneurship and certified vocational training programs to enable young people to obtain internships in appropriate sectors, and also facilitates business creation.

The department is affiliated with the National Vocational Training Council (NCVT) to certify youth outside of school as part of its modular employability skills. The aim is to build a network of agencies involved in youth subsistence programs and to facilitate the exchange of experiences and the organization of cooperative ventures.

In addition, it works with businesses to identify areas of technical and managerial skills that will improve the employability of young people; and organizes their training and deployment as part of a public-private partnership (PPP). It also makes documentaries on innovative youth entrepreneurship projects and disseminates information to young people and youth organisations.
